The Mobile Phone is your most IMPORTANT Device For the most part, Technology Leaders have not looked at the mobile phone as a business tool. Originally, Technology Leaders perceived the mobile phone as merely a channel for voice communications. In more recent years, with the advent of a basic digital camera and messaging capabilities, the perception of the mobile phone shifted to more of a “swiss army knife.” That being a tool with many components, none of them working incredibly well. Technology Leaders were late to the table even in this shift in perception. In many cases, the business demanded these capabilities and the Technology Leaders reluctantly complied. The mobile phone has now transformed to a ”mobile device.” The capabilities of these devices are growing at an amazing rate. Mobile devices are now able to install applications that enable access (both physical and virtual), serve as virtual credit cards, store data securely, remotely backup data and many more true business functions. It is my belief that within 3-5 years, all significant information regarding yourself will be accessible on a mobile device. And most end user computing will be mobile device capable. Technology leaders must get on board. They must come to terms with the fact that the mobile device either is or will be the most important device in their clients’ technology arsenal. This being the case, there is a huge opportunity for the Technology Leader to become the champion of the mobility effort in their organization. Successful Technology Leaders will be the ones that are able to embrace this technology and identify innovative methods for exploiting it to increase productivity, efficiency, and profitability. |
